How to Pack a Hygiene Kit

What do I do when I see a homeless individual on the side of the road? Should I approach them? How can I help?

These may be some questions you’ve asked yourself when you’ve seen someone on the side of the road holding up a cardboard sign.

#1. Build a Hygiene Kit

Hygiene kits offer great resources for individuals facing homelessness. See our video below on how to pack a hygiene or snack kit. It’s important to keep food and hygiene supplies separate, otherwise those granola bars may end up tasting like soap!

Instead of monetary gifts, we encourage gift cards to places like McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts allow them to have a cup of coffee, a meal, and find a place to get out of the elements.

#2. Find out their name

For someone who is often overlooked, it can mean the world to someone when you ask them their name. Many have forgotten what it’s like to have someone speak kindly to them. Don’t forget, people experiencing homelessness are human beings too.

#3. Be safe

We never encourage individuals to approach strangers alone. Use wisdom and go with a friend or group.
